NIDA-NIAAA Mini-Convention Frontiers in Addiction Research
Date & Time: Tuesday, November 07, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Date & Time: Wednesday, November 08, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: National Institute of Health
The annual 2023 NIDA-NIAAA Frontiers in Addiction Research Mini-Convention is joint event organized by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Neuroscience Workgroup. The 2023 Mini-Convention will be held as a 2-day virtual meeting on November 7-8, 2023, from 11am-3pm ET. The annual NIDA-NIAAA Mini-Convention provides a forum for presentations and discussions of current topics in neuroscience and addiction research. Topics of significant or emerging scientific interest were presented as mini-symposia that describe current knowledge and the use of state-of-the-art approaches in pursuing research in select topic areas, and that enable additional discussion of the implications of the research. The Mini-Convention also showcases research by premier early stage and junior investigators working in the fields of alcohol and substance abuse and addiction research through the Early Career Investigator Showcase (ECIS) symposium. The highlight of the Mini-Convention is the keynote address presented by the recipient of the annual Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award. The Jacob P. Waletzky Award is given to a young scientist (within 15 years of his/her Ph.D. or MD degree) whose independent research has led to significant conceptual and empirical contributions to the understanding of drug addiction.

Chen Institute - Beyond the Laboratory: Developing Neurotechnology Solutions for Mass Populations
Date & Time: Friday, November 10, 6:30–10 p.m.
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Institute
Over the past several decades, neuroscience has provided thousands of demonstrations that specific brain signal recordings can provide meaningful information about a person’s brain or mind. However, to date, with very few exceptions, this research has not resulted in solutions that can improve brain- or mind-related function of large numbers of people. After an initial and highly successful workshop in Shanghai in September 2022, we are now proposing a Satellite Event that is dedicated specifically to the question of how to bring neuroscientific achievements to mass populations. In this series, world-reknown speakers from academia and industry discuss: 1) neurotechnologies and their historical context; 2) opportunities of neurotechnologies for mass populations; 3) scientific, technical, financial, and regulatory challenges; and 4) the design, implementation, and optimization of neurotechnologies that can successfully address the needs of mass populations. We expect that this event will contribute to the definition of the current state and future of an important new class of technologies that will have a major impact on people’s lives in the 21st century.

Alternative Models of Consciousness
Date & Time: Saturday, November 11, 6:30–10 p.m.
Sponsor Category: Individual Group
Sponsored By: Mona Sobhani, Allison Paradise
Consciousness remains one of the greatest mysteries of science. Despite decades of research and theory, consciousness researchers are far from closing the gap between neurons and phenomenological experience with a widely-accepted theory. While the dominant theory in neuroscience proposes that consciousness arises from the brain, the past few years have seen alternative theories based on experimental evidence being published in scientific journals. This symposium will present an array of alternative theories of consciousness and the brain, and include group discussion about possible alternative mechanisms.

Long-term Memory Encoding and Connectome Decoding Meetup
Date & Time: Monday, November 13, 6:30–9 p.m.
Sponsor Category: Individual Group
This meeting will bring together researchers in EM connectomics, engram tagging, and the molecular basis of memory, along with computational neuroscientists and theorists, to debate current models of how long-term learning and memory are physically encoded. A short award ceremony will honor exciting recent experiments. A moderated panel will then address this year’s meetup question: “What experiments are needed to support or refute our current theories of memory encoding?” This meetup concludes in a social with catered snacks and drinks.
