The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) has received $128,000 from the estate of James L. Roberts, PhD. With the funds, SfN Council voted to create a new long-term endowed fund, The James L. Roberts Fund, and will use the income from its investments to create and perpetually fund James L. Roberts Trainee Professional Development Awards (TPDAs) beginning at Neuroscience 2024.

SfN member Yang Dan, PhD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and professor of Neurobiology, University of California, Berkeley, has been awarded the 2024 Peter Seeburg Integrative Neuroscience Prize for her ground-breaking research on elucidating the brain circuits that control behavior with a special emphasis on those neuronal networks that control sleep.

Cornelia “Cori” Bargmann, PhD, of The Rockefeller University, and Gerald “Gerry” Rubin, PhD, of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, have been awarded the 2024 Gruber Neuroscience Prize. The award recognizes their pioneering work in elucidating the organization of circuits in behavior, and for their work in developing new genetics tools, which have advanced the entire field of neuroscience.

Professor Larry Abbott at Columbia University, Professor Terrence Sejnowski at the Salk Institute, and Professor Haim Sompolinsky at Harvard University and the Hebrew University were awarded the Brain Prize 2024 for their foundational work in computational and theoretical neuroscience. Each awardee has been a member of SfN for over 30 years.

This one-year pilot program will begin with an interactive panel discussion on November 14 at SfN’s annual meeting, Neuroscience 2023, followed by three webinars in 2024.

Nov 10, 2023Press ReleaseThe Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is supporting a record 447 neuroscience trainees to attend Neuroscience 2023 through the Trainee Professional Development Award (TPDA) program. Over $500,000 in generous donations — the largest amount ever raised for this program — were contributed by individual donors to the Friends of SfN Fund, foundation and corporate supporters, and SfN Council.
