SfN Honors Sen. Roy Blunt and Rep. Tom Cole With Public Advocacy Award
Washington, DC — The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) will honor Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) with the organization’s Public Advocacy Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to advancing the field of neuroscience through their roles as champions for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Congress.
“With this prestigious award, the Society for Neuroscience honors both Sen. Blunt and Rep. Cole for their inspiring leadership in Congress,” SfN President Eric J. Nestler said. “Their commitment to securing robust increases in NIH funding has helped to ensure that America remains at the cutting edge of scientific advancement worldwide and continues our dramatic improvements in public health witnessed over the past several decades.”
The Public Advocacy Award is periodically presented to members of Congress and public leaders dedicated to advancing public understanding and commitment to biomedical research. Past awardees have included former Sens. Tom Harkin and Arlen Specter and former Rep. Patrick Kennedy.
Sen. Blunt and Rep. Cole have demonstrated strong leadership in Congress in support of biomedical research funding as the chairs of their respective chamber’s Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Services. They have consistently secured bipartisan, bicameral support of strong funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This includes the largest increase in NIH funding since 2003 for FY2016 and an addition $2 billion increase for FY2017. They are continuing their efforts to extend support for NIH in FY2018.
Their commitment to achieving funding for lifesaving scientific research will improve the health of the American people, and SfN thanks them for their continued support.
