Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act
Jan 16, 2013
The Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act was ultimately not taken up by the 112th Congress. Several legislators worked to oppose the bill, including Senator Wyden (D-OR), who publicly voiced his opposition to the bill in the Congressional Record on December 18. If enacted, the legislation would have taken the unprecedented step of prohibiting the use of a research model, allowed public comment about the merit of specific research projects and protocols, and opened the door for future prohibition of other research models. SfN members sent 256 letters to the Senate opposing the act.
