The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) and SciTrek: Georgia’s Technology Adventure, an interactive science museum, have collaborated on a variety of initiatives to enhance neuroscience literacy in the community. These initiatives contribute to CBN's mission of integrating research and education and increasing women and underrepresented minorities in neuroscience and behavior fields. These initiatives also meet SciTrek's goals of engaging people of all ages and backgrounds in exploring and experiencing technologies that affect their lives and of inspiring young people as they become the innovators of the future.
Initially, CBN partnered with SciTrek to develop a neuroscience unit of BioTrek, a hands-on biotechnology program for high school students and teachers. Then, as part of Atlanta’s annual Brain Awareness Month, SciTrek hosted events developed by CBN and the Atlanta SFN Chapter including public neuroscience lectures and interactive Brain Fairs. In summer 2002, SciTrek will host the interactive exhibit, BRAIN: The World Inside Your Head, sponsored by Pfizer and produced by Clear Channel Entertainment in collaboration with NIH. SciTrek and CBN collaboratively wrote a grant that has secured supplemental funding from Pfizer Foundation to implement educational programs around the exhibit. These programs include professional development for SciTrek's floor staff, a middle school teacher workshop, one-day summer brain camps, brain-themed overnights, and development of web-based curricula to extend the exhibit beyond its stay in Atlanta.
