The Committee on Committees (CoC) ensures SfN committee structure and composition support the mission and strategic plan. CoC encourages broad participation and representation of members in SfN governance processes by identifying and developing potential future SfN leaders.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Recommend members of the Program and Finance committees, as well as members and chairs of the scientific publications and all business committees of SfN. CoC also suggests new members for its committee.
  • Consider each nominee’s academic excellence, while also ensuring diversity (including race, gender, age, geographic, and scientific) within committees.
  • Work to broaden membership participation in committees.
  • Recommend members to serve as representatives of SfN, as needed.
  • Recommend adjustments and modifications to SfN’s committee structure as needed.
  • Oversee administration of the awards and prizes program.

Mission

To make recommendations to Council that ensure that the SfN committee structure and compositions effectively support the fulfillment of the Society's mission and strategic plan. To encourage broad participation and representation of members in the SfN governance processes and to identify and develop potential future leaders of the Society. To oversee the operations of specific SfN programs that are relevant to the activities of the committee as determined and assigned by Council.

  • Monitor committee realignment
 

Advise

  • Recommend, for Council approval, the members of the Program and Finance Committees, as well as the members and chairs of the Scientific Publications and all business committees of the Society. Make suggestions to Council for members of the Committee on Committees.
  • Make recommendations to Council that take into account not only the academic excellence of each nominee, but also focus on ensuring diversity, including race, gender, age, and geographic and scientific diversity across committees and within each committee.
  • Make recommendations to Council that seek to broaden membership participation in the committees of the Society.
  • Recommend, for Council approval, members to serve on award selection committees or to serve as representatives on behalf of the Society, as needed.
  • Recommend, for Council approval, adjustments and modifications to the Society's committee structure as needed.
 

Manage Activities

  • Oversee the overall administration of the awards and prizes program including award selection committee replacements, solicitation of nominations, and the review and selection process.
  • Ensure appropriate transparency of the awards and prizes program at all times.
  • Manage other governance tasks as assigned by Council.
 

Coordinate and Communicate

  • Solicit committee member and chair replacement candidate suggestions from committees, chapters, Council, and the general membership on an annual basis.
  • Communicate with committee chairs and Council with regard to the status and success of committee realignment.

Composition

The committee is composed of standard committee members who typically serve a four-year term. The SfN secretary serves as chair of the committee.

Schedule

The committee meets at least two times per year, at a spring meeting prior to the spring Council meeting and at the annual meeting. Additional correspondence is conducted by e-mail and conference call, as needed, throughout the calendar year to address issues that arise between meetings of the full committee.
