WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2025 — The Society for Neuroscience (SfN), the world’s largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system, today announced the appointment of Kevin B. Marvel, PhD, as its next Executive Director, effective March 16, 2026.
Marvel brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in the scientific society sector, including 19 years as Chief Executive Officer of the American Astronomical Society (AAS). Under his leadership, the AAS achieved sustained financial strength, expanded membership, transitioned its journals to open access, and acquired Sky & Telescope, broadening the Society’s reach and impact.
The SfN search was supported by David Martin of Sterling-Martin Associates, a leading DC and national search firm specializing in association and nonprofit leadership searches.
At SfN, Marvel will lead an organization of nearly 30,000 members in over 95 countries, overseeing scientific programs, publications, advocacy, and global initiatives that support the neuroscience community and public understanding of brain research.
“Kevin brings a unique combination of executive experience and deep respect for volunteer leadership,” said John H. Morrison, SfN president. “His record of strengthening scientific organizations and his commitment to advocacy and member engagement make him the ideal leader for SfN’s next chapter.”
“I look forward to working with Kevin as SfN continues to evolve as the global hub for neuroscience,” said Nick Spitzer, SfN president-elect. “His perspective from leading another major scientific society will help us adapt and thrive amid rapid change in science, technology, and public policy.”
“I am deeply honored to join the Society for Neuroscience at such a dynamic time for science and society,” said Marvel. “SfN has been expertly led and is an indispensable home for the global neuroscience community. I’m excited to build on its strong foundation—supporting scientific excellence, championing advocacy for research, and ensuring SfN remains a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking organization.”
Marvel will succeed Marty Saggese, who has served as Executive Director since 2002 and led the Society through significant growth and evolution. SfN leadership expressed deep gratitude for Saggese’s stewardship and lasting contributions.
