Call for Topics for 2021 Dual Perspectives
The submission period is now closed. Thank you for your interest in being part of Neuroscience 2020.
The SfN Program Committee is seeking suggestions from the membership for potential topics and presenters for the Dual Perspectives session.
What is the Dual Perspectives session?
- This session consists of presentations and moderated discussion that describe either complementary or opposing views on a subject matter or debate of broad interest in neuroscience, presented by the major proponents of each view.
- The point of the Dual Perspectives session is not to incite dogmatic point-counterpoint arguments among partisans. Rather, the goal is to present descriptions of the same process or phenomenon from different viewpoints such that promote constructive discussion.
- Presentations should provide an opportunity to learn about the history, as well as the various arguments, research, and viewpoints, surrounding a particular topic.
Call for Topics
The Committee seeks topic suggestions with broad appeal that touch on a timely scientific topic. Viewpoints provided by presenters should have research-based differences that can be understood by a broad scientific audience. The session should be educational. The intended audience is trainees.
In 2020, SfN will be celebrating its 50th annual meeting. As the 2020 Dual Perspectives session will be highlighted as a part of the Society’s celebration, the Committee encourages topics that incorporate a theme of looking to the past, present, and future of neuroscience.
Other Considerations
The Dual Perspectives session is planned to be 1.5 hours and will take place at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting. The session will comprise the following:
- 5-minute introduction by the moderator, presenting a brief overview of the selected topic
- 15-minute presentation of the viewpoint of the first presenter
- 15-minute presentation of the viewpoint of the second presenter
- 45-minute moderated discussion between the two presenters, moderator, and audience
- 10 minutes for closing remarks
Diversity and inclusion are organizational priorities of SfN and programming must ensure representation of all members. SfN encourages and promotes participation, accessibility, active representation and leadership from diverse populations. Recognizing that diversity advances the field of neuroscience, SfN encourages membership and participation, regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic status, disability, age and religion. Beyond promoting diversity, the Society promotes an environment that is supportive of all diverse groups in the interest of advancing science.
Appropriate representation of gender diversity, international scientists, and underrepresented minorities is strongly encouraged and will be considered in the selection of the Dual Perspectives session by the Program Committee. The Program Committee retains the right to modify proposed topics as necessary.
Participants will receive half-price registration and early housing.
