Congress Passes First FY 24 Spending Package
Last week, Congress passed a spending package that included six of the 12 appropriations bills for FY 24 and averted a partial government shutdown. This included the Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) bill, as well as the Military Construction, and Related Agencies (MilCon-VA) bill. The CJS bill included $9.06 billion for NSF, a $22 million increase from the FY 23 base budget. The MilCon-VA bill included $943 million for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program, a $27 million increase over FY 23 funding. Congress now has until Friday, March 22, to pass the remaining six appropriations bills, including the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education (LHHS) bill, which includes funding for NIH and the BRAIN Initiative. SfN encourages Congress to pass the remaining six bills to provide complete funding for federal agencies.

Research!America released the results of their January 2024 National Survey. They surveyed 1,005 adults across the country on a myriad of issues pertaining to medical research and funding. Notably, the survey found that a strong bipartisan majority (84%) of Americans agree it is important for candidates in the 2024 election to promote faster medical progress. Other findings discuss global competitiveness in research, research funding, and concerns around public health misinformation.
Join NASEM for a Workshop on AI and Neuroscience Research
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is hosting a workshop on Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26 exploring the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in neuroscience research. The workshop will discuss how neuroscientific discoveries have aided in the development and advancement of AI technologies. This workshop will convene a diverse group of leaders and experts across sectors within the neuroscience and AI ecosystems to further the conversation on current and potential use of AI in neuroscience and strategies to enhance public and regulatory understanding and implications of AI utilization.
