  4. Early Career Advisory Committee

The Early Career Advisory Committee will provide input and strategic guidance to SfN Council and committees on issues central to early career members, undergraduate students, and postbaccalaureate researchers while aiming to support their professional development and enhance their experience within the Society. “Early career” will refer to SfN members who are graduate students or within 10 years of having received their final degree and who consider themselves to be early-stage professionals in their respective sector (academia or otherwise).

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Make recommendations on how Society initiatives, projects, and programming can be designed, enhanced, or modified to address the needs and concerns of the Society's early career, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher members.
  • Provide analysis and input on Society policies and programming relating to early career, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher membership, including initiatives, benefits, categories, and fee structures.

The Early Career Advisory Committee is part of the Membership Engagement Committee Cluster, which also includes the Global Membership Committee.

Mission

The Early Career Advisory Committee will provide input and strategic guidance to SfN Council and committees on issues central to early career members, undergraduate students, and postbaccalaureate researchers while aiming to support their professional development and enhance their experience within the Society. “Early career” will refer to SfN members who are graduate students or within 10 years of having received their final degree and who consider themselves to be early-stage professionals in their respective sector (academia or otherwise).

Responsibilities

Advise and Recommend

  • Make recommendations for Council, SfN committees, and other stakeholder audiences as appropriate on how Society initiatives, projects, and programming can be designed, enhanced, or modified to address the needs and concerns of the Society's early career, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher members.

Monitor

  • Track the state of the Society's efforts to support early career, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher development and monitor their outcomes.
  • Identify and report on emerging trends, opportunities, and challenges in early career, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher development and career paths.

Coordinate and Communicate

  • Ensure effective and appropriate communication with all appropriate parties about early career neuroscientist, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher needs.
  • Coordinate and/or participate in activities with the other committees serving the needs of early career neuroscientists, undergraduate students, and postbaccalaureate researchers.
  • Facilitate communications, outreach, and feedback to SfN from the early career neuroscientist, undergraduate student, and postbaccalaureate researcher community.

Composition

  • The Committee will be comprised of early career members as defined above.
  • Committee members will serve a three-year term.
  • The Chair must have previous experience on the committee. The Chair will serve a two-year term, either in addition to or part of their three-year member term.
  • Committee members and the Chair are recommended by the Committee on Committees and approved by Council.
  • Committee members and the Chair must fit the definition of “early career” at time of appointment; if a member's status changes during the course of their term, that member may remain on the Committee for the duration of the initial term.
  • The Committee will ensure representation of SfN’s early-career members across all experiences and perspectives.
  • The Committee will periodically review its composition to ensure appropriate representation as the composition and needs of the Society and early career neuroscience community evolve.

Schedule

The Committee will meet at least twice per year, usually once during SfN's annual meeting and once in the Spring. Additional work of the Committee is conducted by e-mail and scheduled conference calls throughout the calendar year to address issues that arise between meetings of the full Committee.
