AbstractIn a cue-conflict situation in which local cues on a behavioral track are rotated relative to distal landmarks on the wall, CA1 place cell ensembles were shown to split the representation of the environment, as some place fields rotated CW with distal landmarks and other place fields rotated CCW with the local cues. The CA1 representation also changed within a session, as the place fields frequently altered their firing locations within a 15-lap session (Knierim, J. Neurosci., 2002). The ensemble representation in CA3 has been shown to produce a more coherent response to the cue-conflict environment than CA1, as the majority of CA3 place fields rotated CCW with the local cues (Lee et al., SFN Abstracts, 2003). We investigated whether the CA3 place fields also demonstrate the dynamic changes between laps that were previously seen in CA1. Rats (n = 5) were trained to run on a circular track with 4 textured surfaces on the track (local cues) and 6 distal cues on the wall. Each rat ran 15 laps per session (5 s...Oct 24, 2004
