At the 1999 SFN meeting, students in our lab became interested in the National Brain Bee hosted by Dr. Norbert Myslinski of the Univ. of Maryland. Since the state of Florida did not have a regional Brain Bee, we thought this was a wonderful opportunity. FAU's first Brain Bee was a success, with 73 students registered representing 10 public and private high schools in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. We charged a registration fee of $8 to cover the cost of the Brain Facts book and postage. We were also able to secure approximately $1000 in funding through a bill presented to the FAU Student Government. We received funds to pay for refreshments, trophies, certificates for all participants, and FAU related items to promote our university to the students and their peers. We have also formed the Behavioral Neuroscience Club, a new student organization which is dedicated to promoting Brain Awareness in the community. As a result of this new club's establishment, we have virtually guaranteed funding for future Brain Bees and Brain Awareness activities, since these are listed as regular club activities in our annual budget. We anticipate sending our 2001 regional winner to the Nationals and are currently planning fundraising activities. Lastly, we would like to continue to involve as many students as possible in future Brain Bees. Therefore, for 2001, we plan on adding a team competition, a paper & pencil preliminary round, a free public lecture, and a live Q & A session with the top 10 finalists.
