A major focus of science outreach at Oregon Health & Sciences University has been Brain Awareness Week. This year was unique in its coordination of many activities; 9 months of planning produced a cooperative effort of our scientists with Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Pfizer, Oregon Public Television, Dana Alliance, Oregon SFN Chapter, Powells Books, Oregon Children/Families Commission, Oregon State Library, statewide school districts and advocacy groups. The events educated students, teachers, patients, policy-makers, and the general public. There were 6 major components: the Pfizer brain exhibit; a sequence of lectures with national experts paralleled the public television brain series; the keynote lecturer was Richard Restak, M.D., author of the series'companion book; an educator workshop was offered to over 250 teachers; a Brain Fair, where 100 neuroscientists offered interactive exhibits to over 2000; and a modified Brain Bee--the Brain Bowl--was held where teams from local high schools competed for top honors. Effective collaboration with the Dana Allinace assisted planning, materials development, visiting speaker selection, and creating an impact for thousands of Oregonians.
