First there was the SFN for graduate faculty, then there was FUN for undergraduate faculty, now there is HSFN for high school faculty and students. High Schools For Neuroscience is a network of high school science clubs in the United States, dedicated to enhancing neuroscience literacy. Despite their growing interest in neuroscience, high schools do not have the incentive or support to add it to their curriculum or extracurricular activities. Introducing neuroscience to high school students is important because neuroscience 1) provides viable career options at a critical time in their lives 2) teaches them to make informed choices regarding political and ethical issues of the mind and brain 3) helps them cope with their many neurological and psychological disorders and those of their families 4) shows them how to get the most out of their brains, from memory and motor skills to emotions and sensations 5) helps them understand related aspects of their curriculum and 6) helps them understand themselves and others. Anticipated benefits of HSFN will be to provide 1) periodic electronic newsletters 2) help to prepare for local brain bees and other competitions 3) contacts to arrange for neuroscience speakers for their clubs 4) a calendar of neuroscience research and summer opportunities 5) neuroscience learning materials and 6) ideas and help for science fair projects. Membership is free to any high school science club (biology, psychology, neuroscience, general science, etc). Only the names and contact information of the club, a student leader and a faculty advisor are required. Contact nrm001@ dental. umaryland. edu.
