‘The NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development is being carried out by the 'Brain Development Cooperative Group' and is the most comprehensive and rigorous study of human brain and behavioral development ever conducted. For the Objective-2 part of the study, structural MR images, diffusion tensor MR, and MR spectroscopy are obtained at 3-6 month intervals from non-sedated, normally developing children from the ages of birth through 4.5 years. A 1.5 T scanner (Magnetom Sonata; Siemens) with circularly-polarized radiofrequency head coil was used. Protocol consisted of T1W, PDW/T2W, T1 relaxometry, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and dual contrast T2W. T1W (500.0/12.0 [repetition time msec/echo time msec]), PDW/T2W (3500.0/17.0 and 119 [repetition time msec/echo times msec]), T1 relaxometry (9990.0/46.7 [repetition time msec/echo time msec] with 0, 50, 400, 800, 1200 and 2000 [inversion times msec]), and double echo quantitative T2 (3500.0/83.0 and 165 [repetition time msec/echo times msec]) were acquired in orientation, parallel to AC-PC line. DTI (9000.0/78.0 [repetition time msec/echo time msec]) were acquired transversely. Using T1W, PDW/T2W and dual contrast T2W protocols with 3mm slice thickness. Gaps between contiguous slices were filled by repeating each protocol respectively. DTI protocol was acquired with 3mm thickness, contiguous slices. Six diffusion sensitization directions [(1,0,1), (-1,0,1), (0,1,1), (0,1,-1), (1,1,0), (-1,1,0)] were used at b= 1000 sec/mm2 (plus b=0) and b= 500 sec/mm2 (plus b=0), respectively. Six series were acquired with average=1. Out of six, four were acquired using b=1000 sec/mm2 and two acquired using b=500 sec/mm2. Longitudinal MRI studies of individual subjects illustrate dramatically the dynamic maturational changes of brain size and anatomical contrast. Brain growth curves are presented as well as brain-behavioral correlations.
