Social with brief presentation. Organized by Governmental and Public Affairs (GPA) Committee. Chaired by: M. Rasenick, Incoming GPA Committee Vice Chair.
Guests: M. Rasenick and Graduate Students and Post-Doctoral Students from Portland, Oregon Chapter and New Orleans Chapter.
Mentors: Distinguished senior neuroscientists (T.B.D).
SfN is proud to host a mentoring social that focuses on public advocacy. Dr. M. Rasenick, University of Illinois College of Medicine, addresses the importance of neuroscientists communicating with policymakers about advances in neuroscience and the impact on public policy and its benefits to society. Then, two students from SfN chapters will discuss their first-hand experience of traveling to Washington, DC, to meet with their Senators. Following the presentations will be breakout groups. The groups will be led by mentors discussing the importance of public advocacy in their own lives. Mentors, to be determined, will be high profile members of the SfN leadership. The mentors will help participants develop talking points for the event’s conclusion: mock meetings with Dr. Rasenick playing the role of a Member of Congress. Please join us for this unique event, meant to empower SfN members in affecting public policy that directly affects neuroscience research such as advocating for increased grant funding, expressing support for the use of animal models, and other relevant legislative issues. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to allison@sfn.org. Due to limited space, we are accepting the first 100 people to respond.
