AbstractRecording of single unit responses in macaque primary visual cortex (V1) to repeated stimulation of identical stimulus sequences show a precision of spike times on the order of a few ms. These experimental findings are compared with a large-scale neuronal network model, based upon V1 anatomy and physiology, which has successfully accounted for a variety of functional tuning properties of V1 (Tao et al. 2003 SFN Abst. Vol 27, 2001). We define precision as the standard deviation of first spike times during a well isolated event according to the methods proposed by Bair & Koch (Neural Comput. 8:1185-1202, 1996). Events are defined as periods when the instantaneous firing rate, estimated across many repeats(>60), goes above a threshold. In order to evoke such events, stimuli rich in temporal transients were used.
