Background
The Next Generation Award recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to public communication, outreach, and education about neuroscience. Winning members' chapters are recognized as well.
The Next Generation Award Selection Committee selects one outstanding individual at the predoctoral/ postdoctoral level and one outstanding individual at the junior faculty level from the pool of nominees.
Award recipients receive $750 travel awards to help defray the cost of attending the Society's annual meeting.Winners also receive a $300 honorarium.
Award recipients' chapters receive $2,000 each for use continuing outreach efforts.

Eligibility
For consideration for the Next Generation Award, all chapters and nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Only active Chapters can submit nominations; the Society must have received an annual Chapter Report from the previous year. See chapter guidelines.
- All nominees must be SfN members in good standing who have made outstanding contributions to outreach and science education activities for SfN or its local chapters.
- Predoctoral or postdoctoral trainees are eligible for the award at the trainee level; non-tenured faculty (e.g. assistant professors or their equivalent) are eligible for the junior faculty award.
- An officer of the local SfN chapter must submit a nomination on the Next Generation Nomination Form. The officer must be in good standing with the Society.
- Each chapter can make only one nomination per year.
- The nominee cannot receive another SfN travel award in the same year.
Note: If cooperation was essential for activity success, a chapter can nominate a group of up to four individuals at the predoctoral/postdoctoral level. Nominations must describe the distinct roles of each individual. In this case, each person receives a $300 honorarium and the chapter must appoint one person to receive the $750 travel stipdend and accept the award.

Selection Criteria
The selection committee will evaluate nominations based on the following selection criteria:
- Adherence to goals in the SfN Strategic Plan
- Innovation brought to activity with the potential for producing a lasting impact on target audience
- Potential for growth of the program especially with respect to recruiting new neuroscientists to participate
- Generation of renewable and reusable neuroscience education resources
- Documentation/assessment of lasting effects
The selection committee consists of five members, including PECC chair(s), MCC chair(s), the liaison between PECC and MCC committees, and two members from SEASC.

Conditions and Responsibilities
Award receipients must meet the following conditions and responsibilities:
- Award recipients must attend the awards ceremony at SfN's annual meeting, where the recipient will receive the travel stipend and an award plaque (the honorarium is mailed with the chapter award).
- The following year, award recipients must take leadership roles designing and/or executing chapter outreach efforts; the annual Chapter Report must document this.
- The $750 travel award can only defray travel costs associated with attending the annual meeting.
- The chapter award of $2,000 is reserved for continuing the chapters outreach efforts in the following year; $300 is to be presented to the award winner as an honorarium
- The awardees will be announced on the Society's Next Generation Award Web page.
