Neuroscientist-Teacher Partners
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a teacher arrange a classroom visit by a neuroscientist?
Find your state on the interactive map and click to view local neuroscientist listings. Send an e-mail or call individuals to schedule a visit. Make requests as far in advance as possible.
Who are the neuroscientists listed and why are they listed?
The neuroscientists listed on the page are members of the Society for Neuroscience. Most have a PhD or an MD, but some are graduate students. All neuroscientists have expressed an interest in establishing partnerships with K-12 teachers and students.
How much does it cost to have a neuroscientist visit a school?
Most neuroscientists do not charge for school visits. However, discuss this with the neuroscientist prior to the visit. You may, for instance, be responsible for providing students with project materials that tie into the presentation. The best policy is to ask.
How much time will the neuroscientist spend in my class?
Discuss this with the neuroscientist before the visit. Some presentations last an hour, some are longer. Some neuroscientists establish partnerships with a classroom that lasts for several weeks or even months. Circumstances vary depending on the arrangements made between you and the neuroscientist.
Who is responsible for the content of a presentation by the neuroscientist?
Each neuroscientist is responsible for presentation content. Teachers and neuroscientists should confirm content by communicating prior to presentations.
Do the neuroscientists have any teaching experience with K-12 students?
Some neuroscientists have been giving presentations to K-12 students for many years, whereas others are new to outreach.
Does the SfN train partnering neuroscientists to teach K-12 students or provide materials?
Society members are invited to attend educational sessions at SfN's annual meeting. Sessions provide ideas and tools for bringing neuroscience to K-12 students.
If I contact a neuroscientist asking for a classroom visit, will the neuroscientist agree?
All neuroscientists listed on the outreach page have agreed to list their names and are interested in working with K-12 students and teachers. However, they are participating on a volunteer basis and also have research and teaching obligations. Working your class into their schedule could take time.
