Membership Categories and Fees

Dues Structure Changes for 2009
|

SfN dues structure changed for the first time since 2001. The dues structure changes, now effective, include:
- Lower-fee categories for members with a postdoctoral degree currently working in a trainee program. Rates are $120.
- Regular member dues increase by $15.
- Student member dues increase by $5.
- Rates for scientists from the most resource-limited countries are the same.

Regular Membership - $160
- Scientists living in the United States, Canada or Mexico who have done research relating to neuroscience are eligible for regular membership.
- Regular members living in North America are eligible to vote and hold office in the Society.
- Regular members living outside North America have all the privileges of regular members residing in North America, except the right to hold elected office.

Regular Postdoc Membership - $120
- The Regular Postdoc category is available to those who have obtained their doctoral degree and are currently working in a postdoctoral trainee program.
- Members in the new postdoctoral member category will maintain all the rights and privileges of regular membership (see above).
- Members are eligible for the postdoctoral member category for a period of up to five years.
- Regular Postdoc members can request an extension beyond the five-year limit, but must provide documentation confirming eligibility to SfN’s Membership & Chapters department.

Student Membership - $50
- Students enrolled in programs at degree-granting institutions of higher education can apply for student membership.
- Student membership terminates at the end of the first membership year the student can apply for another membership category after leaving school.
- Former student members are eligible for election to a new membership category according to the same procedures and criteria as other scientific workers.

Student (Undergraduate) Membership - $25
- Students enrolled in programs at undergraduate degree-granting institutions can apply for student (undergraduate) membership.
- Student membership terminates at the end of the first membership year the student can apply for another membership category after leaving the undergraduate program.
- Former undergraduate student members are eligible for election to a new membership category according to the same procedures and criteria as other scientific workers.

Affiliate Membership - $160
- Those interested in Society objectives but ineligible for regular or student membership are eligible for affiliate membership.
- Affiliate membership categories are defined in the Resolutions to Bylaws. (Affiliate members, for example, cannot sponsor an abstract at SfN's annual meeting).

Institutional Program Membership -
Graduate or Postdoc programs - $265
Undergraduate programs - $100
- IP Members are defined as: "Academic departments and programs that award an undergraduate major or advanced degree in neuroscience or a neuroscience-related discipline."
- Each Institutional Program member may designate up to two official representatives for each membership year, and designate one as the primary contact person.
- Membership dues remain the same for the remainder of the calendar/membership year 2009 and for calendar/membership year 2010.

SfN offers reduced membership dues to residents of developing countries.
