Background
The Next Generation Award (NGA) recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to public communication, outreach, and education about neuroscience. Winning members' chapters are recognized as well.

The Next Generation Award Selection Committee selects one outstanding individual at the predoctoral/ postdoctoral level and one outstanding individual at the junior faculty level from the pool of nominees.

Award recipients receive:

  • $750 travel awards to help defray the cost of attending the Society's annual meeting.
  • $300 honorarium.
  • recipients' chapters receive $2,000 to continue their outreach efforts the following year.

The following year, award recipients must take leadership roles designing and/or executing chapter outreach efforts; the annual Chapter Report must document this.

Eligibility

  • Chapters submitting nominations must be active; the Society must have received an annual Chapter Report from the previous year. See chapter guidelines.
  • Predoctoral or postdoctoral trainees are eligible for the award at the trainee level; scientists within ten years of having received an advanced degree are eligible at the junior faculty level.
  • In cases where cooperation was essential for the success of the activity, a group of up to four individuals may be nominated at the predoctoral/postdoctoral level by one chapter.* The distinct roles of each individual must be clearly described in the nomination material.
  • Nominees must have made outstanding contributions to outreach and science education activities for SfN or its local chapters.
  • The nominee may not be a recipient of another SfN travel award in the same year.

* Note: In this case, each person receives a $300 honorarium and the chapter must appoint one person to receive the $750 travel stipend.

Nomination Criteria

  • Nominations must be made by an officer of the local chapter of SfN (e.g., the chapter representative).
  • Nominee does not have to be an SfN member.
  • Each chapter may only submit one nomination per category per year.

Selection Criteria
The selection committee will evaluate nominations based on the following selection criteria:

  • Adherence to goals in the SfN Strategic Plan
  • Innovation brought to activity with the potential for producing a lasting impact on target audience
  • Potential for growth of the program especially with respect to recruiting new neuroscientists to participate
