A brain-computer interface can be realized with EEG, ECoG, or spike activity recorded from the brain. Hippocampal place cells are used (e.g. to reconstruct the position of an animal) or the cerebellum is used to investigate learning functions. Therefore different types of electrodes and amplifiers are used. The real-time analysis of the action potentials must be done for multiple units in parallel. The workshop will explain the necessary hardware and software components in order to run such experiments successfully. Examples will include EEG and ECG analysis of foraging rats to detect the home base, position reconstruction with place cells, and real-time learning of the cerebellum. Attendance is free of charge, but registration is required because space is limited. For registration, contact Christoph Guger at

NeuroProbes – Multifunctional probe arrays for intracortical applications
Symposia Meeting
Date & Time: Monday, November 14, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Location: Walter E. Washington Convention Center
Room: 156
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: University of Freiburg (Germany), IMEC Leuven (Belgium), ATLAS Neuroengineering
Show description
This satellite event summarizes the results obtained in the framework of the publically funded European research project NeuroProbes aiming at the development of multifunctional neural probe arrays for intracortical applications. The speakers will first detail the probe architecture which relies on silicon-based as well as glass-based comb structures comprising (i) microelectrodes with on-shaft CMOS electronic circuitry for electrical recording and stimulation, (ii) microfluidic channels for local administration of drug liquids and (iii) biosensors for detection of neurotransmitters such as glutamate and choline. In addition, the versatile assembly concept of NeuroProbes is illustrated which enables the realization of two- and three-dimensional probe arrays with any combination of the stated functionalities. Finally, the approach of electronic depth control (EDC) is introduced enabling the virtual translation of electrode arrays inside the brain tissue.
The technical part of the satellite event will be accompanied by presentations of our neuroscience partners describing the most recent in vivo experiments in rats and monkeys using these innovative probe arrays.

Pretzels and endplates: Motor neuron pathology and the role of SMN in motor neuron development.

Date & Time: Monday, November 14, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Location: Walter E. Washington Convention Center
Room: 150B
Sponsor Category: University/Non-Profit
Sponsored By: SMA Organizations: Fight SMA, Families of SMA, SMA Foundation, and MDA
Show description
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a relatively common neurodegenerative disease caused by the loss of the Survival Motor Neuron 1 (SMN1) gene and is a leading genetic cause of infantile death. SMA is classically defined as a lower motor neuron disease, however, it is unclear why reduced levels of SMN lead to motor neuron loss. A growing number of SMA clinical trials are on the horizon, yet our understanding of neuronal development and degeneration in SMA is only now coming into focus. Chien-Ping Ko (University of Southern California), George Mentis (Columbia University), and Charlotte Sumner (Johns Hopkins University) will present cutting-edge research that details the functional deficits of SMA neurons and how the emerging pathology in rodent models and human tissues provides an essential baseline for upcoming clinical trials as well as insight into SMN-associated function. Chair: TBD Speakers (draft titles only) Chien-Ping Ko, PhD: Synaptic Defects in the Spinal and Neuromuscular Circuitry in a Mouse Model of Spinal Muscular Atrophy; George Mentis, PhD: Early Functional Impairment of Sensory-Motor Connectivity in a Mouse Model of Spinal Muscular Atrophy; Charlotte Sumner, MD: Analysis of SMA Tissue and Neuronal Pathology from Autopsies.

The Behavioural Repertoire of Zebrafish: a Tool for Neuroscience Research
Symposia Meeting
Date & Time: Monday, November 14, 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Location: Walter E. Washington Convention Center
Room: 152B

In recent years, studies from several laboratories have shown that behavioural analyses of zebrafish provide an opportunity to probe the neural networks underlying behavior. The combination of a relatively simple nervous system and easily quantifiable behaviors make zebrafish an ideal choice for behavioral neurobiology. Furthermore, the formation and function of neurotransmitter signalling pathways is conserved between zebrafish and other vertebrates, highlighting the usefulness of studies conducted in fish. Zebrafish larvae display several measurable behaviors including sleep/wake activity, locomotion, predation, phototaxis, and thigmotaxis. Coupled to the transgenic lines available and the emergence of optogenetic technology, studies of larvae may allow the dissection of behavioral circuits at the cellular level in intact living animals. Furthermore, several recent studies using videotracking and high-throughput screening have demonstrated the utility of zebrafish larvae to discover and characterize psychoactive drugs. Although more difficult to manipulate, adult zebrafish display a full repertoire of mature behaviors, including reward, learning and memory, aggression, and social behaviors, making their analysis particularly enticing. Thus adult fish can be used in comparative studies of behavior, allowing the general principles of behavioral control to be discovered. This symposium represents an opportunity to learn more about zebrafish as model for behavioral neurobiology. Internationally respected speakers will present their latest research and discuss the future of the field. It also will provide participants with an informal setting to discuss questions related to their own research with experts.
