Louise Hanson Marshall Special Recognition Award
Background
This award recognizes an individual working outside of the field of neuroscience for significant contributions to promoting the professional advancement of women in neuroscience through teaching, public advocacy, and organizational leadership.
Louise Hanson Marshall was the first recipient of the Women in Neuroscience (WIN, predecessor to the Committee on Women in Neuroscience, C-WIN) Special Recognition Award for a lifetime of distinguished service and outstanding contributions to the field of neuroscience. Marshall led, sequentially, three complete scientific careers on top of a rich personal and family life: first, as a physiologist; second, as a facilitator, organizer, and editor of neuroscience and neuroscientists; and third, as a historian of neuroscience. It is important to note that Marshall never actively engaged in bench research as a neuroscientist. However, because of her efforts to define and survey the field, launch a professional society (SfN), and document the history of its practitioners, organizations, and ideas, she was truly a woman in neuroscience. Read Marshall's biography.
The award includes complimentary SfN annual meeting registration and select meeting travel expenses.
