Graduate Student Travel Awards

Background 
The Society for Neuroscience offers Graduate Student Travel Awards, administered by the Professional Development Committee (PDC), to honor outstanding female and male graduate researchers.

The award includes complimentary registration and a stipend to offset travel expenses for the SfN annual meeting.

Eligibility
Awardees are chosen on the basis of the scientific merit of their abstracts, a letter of nomination from a principal investigator or advisor, research and career goals, and essay.  The award is open to both women and men.

Applications must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant must be the first author of an abstract to be presented at the annual meeting
  • Applicant's abstract must be of the highest scientific merit
  • Applicant and his or her advisor must be members of SfN
  • Applicant must be a graduate student who has advanced to doctoral candidacy 
  • Laboratory from which the awardee is chosen should not have been the recipient of a travel award the previous year

Application Information 
Please upload the following application ination materials to the new SfN awards submission site:

  • Completed application form (Word 97-2003 document, .doc)
  • Copy of the applicant's abstract submission confirmation form for the 2010 SfN annual meeting
  • Curriculum vitae (please include education, date at which nominee received PhD, honors/awards, and publications (abstracts and manuscripts) in the format provided: curriculum vitae template (Word 97-2003 document, .doc)
  • One-page letter of recommendation from the applicant's advisor
  • Essay by the applicant about a woman scientist who has inspired him/her (no more than 500 words). All essays must be the applicant's own words and ideas. Using someone else's work without citing the source is not permissible - this includes copying, rephrasing, and borrowing facts, statistics, or other material.
  • Description of the applicant's research and career goals (no more than 250 words)

Deadline for receipt of application materials: Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

All applicants will be notified of the selection results in August. Award checks will be presented at the Society's 40th Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA.
