Background
SfN's Chapters Graduate Student Travel Award honors outstanding graduate students nominated by their local SfN chapter. The award provides a stipend to help defray travel expenses and provide complimentary meeting registration fees.
Awardees are chosen based on the scientific merit of the abstract, evidence of outreach activities, and letters of nomination from the principal investigator or mentor and the local nominating chapter.

Eligibility
Each chapter may submit up to two nominations to the SfN Membership & Chapters Committee (MCC). Nominees should meet the following criteria:
- The nominee must be the first author of an abstract to be presented at the annual meeting.
- The abstract must be of the highest scientific merit.
- The nominee's advisor must be a member of SfN.
- The nominee must be a graduate student who has advanced to candidacy for a PhD.
- Only one applicant from a given laboratory may be considered by a chapter in any given calendar year.
- No member of the laboratory from which the nominee is chosen should have been the recipient of an SfN travel award the previous year.
- The nominee may not be a recipient of another SfN travel award in the same year.

Application Information
The following materials are required for nominations:
- Complete nomination form (Word 97-2003 document, .doc)
- Copy of abstract submitted for the annual meeting.

A one-page curriculum vitae from the nominee, including the following information:
- Education (including the date the nominee advanced to Ph.D candidacy)
- Honors/awards
- Publications (abstracts and manuscripts).
- A one-page letter of recommendation from the advisor

The chapter representative must submit a one-page letter of nomination describing the following:
- Selection process
- Criterion for judging the abstract's scientific merit
- Reason the candidate is eligible for the award
All required materials should be submitted as attachments (PDFs preferred) in a single e-mail to chapterawards@sfn.org. Subject line should read "Graduate Student Travel Award." Questions can also be directed to this email.
Award deadline: June 1, 2009.

Conditions and Responsibilities
Review the following conditions and responsibilities:
- Award letters are sent to award winners and chapter representatives.
- To receive checks, recipients must attend the award reception at the annual meeting.
- At the meeting, recipients receive a ribbon designating award status.
- Note: Graduate students who want to attend the meeting should not register until nomination status notification is received - notification is given prior to the deadline for advance registration.
