Animals in Research
SfN is committed to animal research advocacy. The Society:

  • Supports responsible use of animals in research
  • Tracks legislation, as well as judicial and regulatory decisions, impacting member research progress
  • Supports scientists under attack by groups attempting to end use of animals in research
  • Strives to educate the public
  • Is a founding member of the Coalition for Animals in Research Education (CARE), a group of leading scientific organizations supporting responsible use of animals in biomedical research

In addition, SfN's Committee on Animals in Research (CAR) serves as a resource for all SfN members under attack or concerned about attacks. CAR also organizes a panel on the topic at SfN's annual meeting and guides the Society's position on animal research.

2009

April 16 – SfN sent a letter to UCLA researchers offering support and appreciation for its efforts in the creation of UCLA Pro-Test, a group supporting responsible animal research.

April 2 - NABR releases security notice on World Lab Animal Liberation Week 2009.

March 5 - Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) introduces The Great Ape Protection Act (H.R. 1326) to prohibit research on great apes, including chimpanzees.

March 5- SfN releases new Animal Research wallet card.

Feb. 20- The FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested four animal rights extremists suspected of terrorizing University of California researchers, stemming from a series of threatening incidents beginning in October 2007. SfN, with partner organization NABR, continues to monitor this and condemns such attacks.

2008

Aug. 29 - New California legislation could provide increased protection for academic researchers.

Aug. 27 - Ruling threatens primate research in Switzerland.

Aug. 18 - SfN announces panelists for Neuroscience 2008.
